यतवाचं वाचयन्ति ताडयन्ति न वक्ति चेत् । तर्जयन्त्यपरे वाग्भि: स्तेनोऽयमिति वादिन: । बध्नन्ति रज्ज्वा तं केचिद् बध्यतां बध्यतामिति ॥ ३६ ॥

Text

yata-vācaṁ vācayanti tāḍayanti na vakti cet tarjayanty apare vāgbhiḥ steno ’yam iti vādinaḥ badhnanti rajjvā taṁ kecid badhyatāṁ badhyatām iti

Synonyms

yata-vācam—who had taken a vow of silence;vācayanti—they try to make speak;tāḍayanti—they beat;navakti—he does not speak;cet—if;tarjayanti—they cajole;apare—others;vāgbhiḥ—with their words;stenaḥ—thief;ayam—this person;iti—thus;vādinaḥ—saying;badhnanti—they bind up;rajjvā—with rope;tam—him;kecit—some;badhyatāmbadhyatām—“Bind him up! Bind him up!”;iti—thus saying.

Translation

Although he had taken a vow of silence, they would try to make him speak, and if he did not speak they would beat him with sticks. Others would chastise him, saying, “This man is just a thief.” And others would bind him up with rope, shouting, “Tie him up! Tie him up!”
